Chapter Two – 2012
“I’ll be damned, Birmingham’s got me down again.
Why’d you have to say its name? Tell my why, my friend.
I’ve tried so many times to put it far behind.
A fair-skinned girl there, she won’t leave my mind.”
How’s a girl to resist a man who’s been writing songs, poems, and Facebook statuses about her over the last nineteen years? It can’t be done, I tell you!
Now, it’s not like he pined away constantly all that time. That would’ve been unbelievable and, quite frankly, a wee bit creepy. No, we’d both lived full lives since the last time we saw each other in 1994, but now I knew that it wasn’t just me who had remembered all those years.
Shortly after we broke up in 1993, he sent me a song called “Jennifer” that he’d written about us, but it never occurred to me that he might have written more, so I was blown away the first time I heard “Birmingham.”
“A lifetime in just five months, such a deadly pace.
I’d gladly pay the price again for a single taste.
Vulcan looks upon these streets with a salty grin,
And no woman made me feel the way she did back then.”
Intoxicating stuff…
I can’t even count all the times I’ve danced in the kitchen to this song, exclaiming out loud, “That fair-skinned girl is me!” I don’t know what in the world I did to become unforgettable to Chance Chambers, but I’m grateful every day for whatever it was.
